The main role of the Legal Metrology organization is to ensure Accuracy of commercial weights and measure which are used for various trades in the state. This Department protects the consumer’s interest by conducting surprise visits and inspection of the trader’s premises, packers, packing units to verify the accuracy of weights and measures as well as to check the net contents. A short delivery and over-pricing are the same offences against the consumers. The Legal Metrology has to keep strict vigil on the offenders and enforce the provision of law by firm hands. Different penal provisions are prescribed for errant traders and other persons under the Legal Metrology Act 2009. Such offenders are brought to book and punished accordingly. The department conducts re-verification camps in the remote areas of the state every year and in these camps, department carry verification work of all kind of weights and measures of traders. The legal metrology officers educate poor and economically week consumers about their rights also.

विधिक मापविज्ञान संगठन की मुख्य भूमिका राज्य में व्यापार और वाणिज्य में प्रचलित बाँट-माप एवं तौल यंत्रों की सत्यता और प्रमाणिकता को बनाये रखना है। इस प्रयोजन से विभागीय अमला राज्य में व्यापारिक प्रतिष्ठानों में स्थापित और उपयोग में लाये जा रहे बाँट माप एवं तौल उपकरणों की लगातार जांच करता है। विधिक मापविज्ञान अधिनियम, 2009 के अंतर्गत गठित नियमों के अनुसार डिब्बा बंद वस्तुओं में पैक की गई सामग्री, निर्माता द्वारा घोषित मात्रा एवं कीमत पर उपभोक्ताओं को उपलब्ध हो, इस उद्देश्य से भी पैकर्स और खुदरा व्यापारियों के परिसर की जांच विभागीय अमले द्वारा लगातार किया जाता है एवं नियमों का उल्लंघन करने वाले व्यापारियों/प्रतिष्ठानों के विरूद्ध प्रकरण दर्ज कर नियमानुसार दण्डात्मक कार्यवाही की जाती है। विधिक मापविज्ञान संगठन, राज्य के सुदूर एवं पहुचविहीन इलाकों में बाँट-माप सत्यापन शिविरों का आयोजन करता है, जहां व्यापारियों के तौल उपकरणों की सत्यता एवं प्रमाणीकरण की कार्यवाही के साथ आर्थिक रूप से कमजोर उपभोक्ताओं को उनके अधिकारों के विषय में जानकारी प्रदान करते हुए उन्हें दैनिंदन खरीददारी के दौरान धोखाधड़ी से बचने के तरीकों से अवगत कराया जाता है।
